Moving Day Preparation Guide
Your Friendly Guide to a Smooth, Safe, and Cost-Effective Move
We want your move to be as smooth, safe, and cost-effective as possible. This friendly guide is designed to help you prepare for moving day and understand how certain items are handled to ensure everything is moved and set up properly.
These examples are meant to be helpful suggestions. Items similar to those listed below may also require extra care, packing, or preparation.
Items That Usually Need Extra Packaging or Preparation
The following items typically need additional packing or special attention before loading:
Why a Little Extra Packing Helps Everyone
Items that are not fully packed or sealed can shift during transport or bump into other furniture. Proper packing helps protect your belongings and allows the crew to load the truck more efficiently.
When everything is boxed, sealed, and organized, the move typically goes faster and more smoothly while reducing the risk of damage.
How Unpacked or Last-Minute Items Can Add Time (and Cost)
We understand that moving is stressful and things can feel rushed toward the end. However, even a few unpacked or loose items can slow the process more than most people expect.
When the crew needs to stop to gather loose items or finish packing open boxes, those extra minutes can add up quickly. For example, loose lamps, toys, bathroom items, shoes, pantry goods, or bins without lids may each add just a few minutes β but together, they can easily add 45 minutes to an hour or more.
π‘ A friendly suggestion:
Anything that fits neatly into a box should be placed in one and sealed with tape. This helps keep your move efficient, predictable, and as close to the estimate as possible.
Furniture Disassembly & Reassembly Guidelines
To ensure safety, efficiency, and proper handling of your furniture, Maloney's Moving follows clear guidelines regarding disassembly and reassembly.
What We Reassemble
Our crew is happy to reassemble:
- βFurniture that was disassembled by our team during the move
- βBrand-new furniture that is still in the box and includes manufacturer instructions
When our crew disassembles furniture, we keep hardware organized and follow the correct order of disassembly. This allows us to safely and properly reassemble the item at the destination.
What We Do Not Reassemble
For safety and liability reasons, we do not reassemble furniture that was disassembled by:
- βThe customer
- βAnother moving company
- βA previous installer or contractor
This includes furniture that arrives already taken apart or with loose, unlabeled, or mixed hardware.
High-Liability & Sensitive Items
In addition, there are certain items that we do not disassemble or reassemble at all, due to their sensitive nature and higher liability risk. These include, but are not limited to:
These items often involve precise assembly requirements, safety ratings, or manufacturer-specific standards. Improper assembly β even when done carefully β can create serious safety risks or void manufacturer warranties.
For these reasons, we recommend that sensitive or high-liability items be disassembled and reassembled by the manufacturer, retailer, or a qualified installer.
Why These Guidelines Exist
Furniture construction varies widely, especially with items such as IKEA or particle-board furniture. When an item has already been disassembled by someone else β or when it involves safety-critical components β we have no way of confirming:
- β’The original assembly order
- β’Whether all hardware is present and correctly matched
- β’If internal components were stressed, weakened, or damaged
Attempting reassembly under these conditions can result in instability, damage, or safety concerns after setup. These guidelines exist to protect your belongings, your home, and everyone involved in the move.
