Customer Service Guide

Policies, Billing & Your Rights — Maloney's Moving LLC

This guide is provided to every customer before their move as a matter of professional best practice and transparency.

Section 1: What We Do

Standard Moving Service Scope

Maloney's Moving LLC provides professional household and commercial moving services throughout South Jersey. Our standard moving service includes the following:

Loading & Unloading

Our crew loads your belongings onto the truck at your origin address and unloads them at your destination. We place furniture and boxes in the rooms you designate. All items are handled with care using professional moving techniques.

Furniture Protection

We wrap and pad furniture using moving blankets, stretch wrap, and protective materials as part of our standard service. This includes sofas, dressers, tables, desks, headboards, and similar household items. Doorways and banisters are padded when necessary to prevent damage to your home.

Furniture Disassembly & Reassembly

Our crew disassembles furniture that must be taken apart for safe transport — such as bed frames, sectional sofas, dining tables, and desks. Items disassembled by our crew are reassembled at the destination. We also reassemble brand-new furniture that is still in the box and includes manufacturer instructions. We do not reassemble furniture that was disassembled by the customer, another moving company, or a previous installer.

Specialty Item Handling

We move pianos, gun safes, hot tub covers, large exercise equipment, and other heavy or oversized items. Specialty items may require advance scheduling and additional crew members. Customers should notify us of any specialty items at the time of booking so we can plan accordingly.

Truck & Equipment

Every move includes a fully equipped moving truck, dollies, hand trucks, moving blankets, stretch wrap, floor runners, and all tools required for standard disassembly and reassembly. Specialty equipment — including piano boards, gun safe skates, appliance dollies, and stair-climbing equipment — is available and deployed as needed.

Section 2: What We Do Not Do

Items & Services Outside Standard Scope

The following items and services fall outside the scope of our standard moving service. This section is provided so you know what to arrange separately before moving day.

Appliance Disconnection & Reconnection

Our crew does not disconnect or reconnect any appliance connected to water, gas, or electrical lines. This includes washers, dryers, dishwashers, gas ranges, refrigerators with water lines, and any hard-wired appliances. All appliances must be fully disconnected before our crew arrives. Front-load washers must have shipping bolts installed prior to transport.

Prohibited Items

Maloney's Moving does not transport propane tanks, gasoline, flammable liquids, hazardous materials, live plants, live animals, perishable food, or biohazardous items. These items pose safety and liability risks during transport and must be handled by the customer directly.

Items Outside Standard Service

Hot tubs, above-ground pools, and assembled pool tables fall outside our standard service scope. These items typically require specialized disassembly or certified technicians. If you need assistance with any of these, please contact us in advance so we can discuss your options.

Personal Valuables

Firearms, cash, jewelry, important documents, medications, and irreplaceable personal items should always be transported personally by the customer. These items should never be packed on the moving truck.

High-Liability Furniture Assembly

We do not disassemble or reassemble baby cribs, bunk beds with structural or safety components, wall-mounted furniture or shelving, Murphy beds, motorized or adjustable beds, or any item requiring specialized tools, calibration, or manufacturer certification. These items involve precise assembly requirements and safety ratings — improper assembly can create serious safety risks or void manufacturer warranties. We recommend that these items be handled by the manufacturer, retailer, or a qualified installer.

Section 3: How to Prepare for Moving Day

What to Do Before Our Crew Arrives

Proper preparation is the single most effective way to keep your move on schedule and your final bill close to the estimate. The more prepared you are, the faster and smoother the move will go.

Packing Requirements

All personal belongings should be packed in sealed, taped boxes before our crew arrives. Open boxes, bins without lids, trash bags filled with loose items, and unsealed containers slow down the loading process and increase the risk of damage. Anything that fits neatly into a box should be placed in one and sealed with tape.

Items That Need Extra Attention

The following items typically need additional packing or preparation: cat trees and pet structures, aquariums and glass enclosures, fragile IKEA or particle-board furniture, lampshades and light fixtures, framed artwork and mirrors, loose electronics and gaming accessories, decorative items such as vases and ornaments, and small appliances including fans, heaters, and coffee makers.

Appliances

All appliances must be disconnected from water, gas, and electrical lines before our crew arrives. Refrigerators should be defrosted and emptied. Front-load washers must have shipping bolts installed. If you need a referral for an appliance technician, contact us and we will do our best to point you in the right direction.

Access & Pathways

Clear a path from each room to the front door and from the front door to where the truck will be parked. Remove any items blocking hallways, stairways, and doorways. If your building requires elevator reservations, loading dock scheduling, or parking permits, arrange those in advance and share the details with us before moving day.

Impact on Time & Cost

When the crew needs to stop to gather loose items, finish packing open boxes, or navigate cluttered pathways, those extra minutes add up. Even a few unpacked items can easily add 45 minutes to an hour or more to the total job time. We encourage you to complete all packing the night before your move so our crew can begin loading immediately upon arrival.

Section 4: Billing, Time & Access

How Your Move Is Billed

Hourly Rate & Four-Hour Minimum

Your move is billed at the hourly crew rate quoted on your written estimate. Every move is subject to a four-hour minimum charge per day, billed at your quoted crew rate. This applies regardless of how quickly the job is completed. For two-day moves, the four-hour minimum applies separately to each day.

When the Clock Starts & Stops

Your billable time begins when the crew arrives at your origin address and begins working. The clock runs continuously through loading, driving to the destination, and unloading. Billable time ends when the last item is placed and the crew completes a final walkthrough with you.

Travel Time

Travel time is charged as a flat fee added at the end of your hourly billable time. It covers the drive from our warehouse to your origin address before the move and the return drive after the job is complete. The travel time charge is listed as a separate line item on your written estimate before moving day and does not change on the day of the move.

Written Estimate

Before your move, you will receive a written estimate that includes your hourly crew rate, the travel time charge, and the four-hour daily minimum. This estimate is based on the information you provide about your move — including inventory, access conditions, and any specialty items. The more accurate the information you provide, the closer your final bill will be to the estimate.

Factors That Can Increase Time

Several factors can increase the total billable time beyond the original estimate: unpacked or loose items, elevator wait times, long carry distances, narrow stairways or tight hallways, items not disclosed at the time of booking, and delays caused by third parties or building management. We are transparent about billing and will always communicate with you on-site if the job is taking longer than expected.

Section 5: Liability, Valuation & Your Coverage Options

Understanding Your Protection During the Move

Standard Carrier Liability

Standard carrier liability is $1.00 per pound per article as required under New Jersey law (N.J.S.A. 45:14D-1 et seq.). This is the minimum statutory carrier liability required for all licensed New Jersey Public Movers and is included at no additional charge.

Example: Under standard carrier liability, a 50-pound dining chair damaged during the move would be covered at $50.00 (50 lbs × $1.00/lb). This is not replacement value — it is a per-pound liability calculation.

Full Replacement Value Insurance

Full replacement value transit insurance is available through licensed third-party insurance providers. This coverage must be requested and arranged in writing prior to your move date. Maloney's Moving does not sell insurance directly. If you would like full replacement value coverage, contact us and we will provide referrals to licensed providers.

Filing a Damage Claim

If any item is damaged during your move, take the following steps:

  1. Photograph the damage as soon as it is discovered.
  2. Submit your written claim to [email protected] within 90 days of your move date.
  3. Include your original Order for Service or Bill of Lading, photographs of the damage, item description, and estimated weight.

Per New Jersey law, all claims must be filed in writing within 90 days of delivery. Claims filed after 90 days may not be eligible for consideration.

Pre-Existing Damage

Our crew documents the condition of your items before loading. Scratches, dents, chips, or wear that existed before the move are noted and are not covered under carrier liability. If you have concerns about a specific item, please point it out to the crew leader before loading so it can be documented together.

Section 6: Payment Terms

Accepted Payment Methods & Policies

Accepted Payment Methods

MethodDetails
Cash10% discount applied
Credit or Debit Card3% processing fee
Venmo or Cash App3% processing fee

When Payment Is Due

Payment is due in full at the completion of your move before our crew departs. We do not offer post-move billing or payment plans. The final amount is calculated based on your actual billable time plus the travel time charge listed on your estimate.

Deposits

A deposit is required to secure your move date. Your deposit is applied toward the total cost of your move and is deducted from your final balance on moving day.

Cancellation & Refund Policy

Cancellations made no less than 72 hours prior to your scheduled move date are eligible for a full deposit refund. Cancellations or reschedules made within 72 hours of your scheduled move date will result in forfeiture of your deposit. Forfeited deposits cannot be applied toward a rescheduled move date — a new deposit is required to secure any future booking.
